Le Thoronet Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey, built around 1160-1190. It is located in the Massif des Maures, 4.5 km west of Le Thoronet – a small village in the Département VAR close to the river Argens.
History and building style
The abbey is built in the strict geometrical Romanesque style. Le Thoronet is one of the main representatives of the Roman period in Provence.
The acoustics of the church are exceptionally good. Because of the exceptionally good acoustics in the church it is regularly used as a venue for classical concerts and Gregorian chants.
The Abbaye du Thoronet is located slightly away from the main touristic routes. Even during the main season it is seldom overcrowded. If you are looking for a little piece and quiet you will find it here.
While you’re there
Close to the Abbaye are several hiking and mountain biking trails.
It is possible to combine a visit to Le Thoronet with a canoe trip on the river Argens.
When driving to Le Thoronet you will pass through the small town Lorgues.
